October's Gem: Five Looks with Opulent Opal

October's Gem: Five Looks with Opulent Opal

October has the most romantic birthstone of the year. Opal is the stone of shifting colour — a single gem holding fire and frost at once, flashing green, blue, pink and gold as it catches the light. It's long been said to bring good fortune to the wearer, and legend gives it the power to borrow the colours of everything around it. Fitting, then, that no two opals ever quite match.

We've gathered some of our opal collection into five looks — five complete ways to wear the stone of the month, from delicate everyday studs to one-off handmade pieces set with diamonds. Whether you're buying for an October birthday, marking something special, or simply treating yourself, there's a look here with your name on it.

Look One — Marquise Elegance

A bold, contemporary start. The sets a marquise-cut created opal in a warm yellow gold cross-over setting — 24mm tall on an adjustable 16–18" chain, so it sits just as well over a fine knit as it does against bare skin. Beautifully balanced by a pair of , 15mm in height and set to sit neatly on the lobe.

The finish is a — a natural gem opal of 0.35ct framed by 0.20ct of diamonds. Handmade and available in any finger size, and in white gold, rose gold or platinum if you'd like it in another metal.

Look Two — The Everyday Classics

If you want opal you can wear without thinking about it, this is the look. The is a natural 0.97ct oval gem opal in a clean bezel setting — 9x7mm, on an adjustable 16–18" trace chain. Quiet, classic, endlessly wearable.

The are the earring equivalent — 8mm rounds, light as anything, and the pair we'd reach for first on a school run or a Monday morning. Then an : a generous 12x16mm oval Opalique stone, handmade and available to order in any size and in yellow, white or rose gold, 18ct, or platinum.

Round it off with the — 19cm, with the opal tones lifted by cubic zirconia. This one reappears in Look Five, and you'll see why.

Look Three — Haloed in Sparkle

Opal with a little more glow. The are nice and flat, sitting flush to the lobe at 10mm x 12mm — comfortable enough for all day, bright enough to carry an evening. Paired with the , a detailed gold band set with cubic zirconia, and the doing the same work at the wrist.

This is the look for someone who loves opal but wants it with a bit of shine around it.

Look Four — Opal and Diamond

The dressiest of the five, and the one that leans hardest into opal's natural glamour. The bring a modern, architectural shape — 8mm x 10mm in 9ct yellow gold, and there's a matching pendant in store if you'd like the set.

Above them, the : a 1.70ct gem opal with 0.06ct of diamonds, 11mm across on an adjustable 40–46cm trace chain. Matching earrings are available too. On the hand, the — a 10mm x 8mm gem opal, millgrain-set, with four round brilliant-cut diamonds in an illusion setting. Also handmade to order in any size and any of our golds or platinum.

Look Five — Soft and Understated

A gentler finish to the collection. The are the smallest of our opal studs at just 5mm x 7mm — properly delicate, and a lovely first piece of opal for someone younger. Worn with the from Look Three and the , this is opal worn quietly, for every day.

Come and See Them

Opal is a stone that photographs beautifully and still can't be done justice on a screen — the colour only really happens when it moves in your hand. Happy birthday to everyone turning another year older this October — and happy opal-wearing to the rest of you.
